Torrente and Velilla de Cinca, in a regional project against the tiger mosquito

Torrent and Velilla

The two municipalities of Bajo/Baix Cinca have been selected to participate in a study promoted by the Government of Aragon in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza

Torrente de Cinca and Velilla de Cinca are participating in a regional project for monitoring and preventing the tiger mosquito, promoted by the Government of Aragon with the collaboration of the University of Zaragoza.

The two municipalities have been selected within the Bajo Cinca region to be part of a study that will allow data to be collected on the evolution of this species and improve its early detection in the area.

Traps to detect tiger mosquito eggs

As part of this action, traps designed to detect tiger mosquito eggs have been installed at different points in Torrente de Cinca and Velilla de Cinca.

The devices will allow for the collection of information and monitoring of the species' population trends in both municipalities. The data obtained will improve our understanding of its presence and, if necessary, inform the implementation of prevention and control measures.

The traps were installed after an informational meeting that addressed the potential risks associated with the tiger mosquito and the importance of maintaining surveillance systems to detect its appearance and spread.

The Lower Cinca region, within the tiger mosquito surveillance zone

This action is part of the entomological surveillance programs developed in Aragon with the participation of the University of Zaragoza. The objective is to obtain information that will allow researchers to understand the evolution of the tiger mosquito and improve early detection capabilities.

The Bajo Cinca region has a history of monitoring this species. Previous campaigns have confirmed the presence of the tiger mosquito in municipalities within the region, including Fraga and Mequinenza.

The participation of Torrente de Cinca and Velilla de Cinca will allow for an expansion of the available data on the situation of the tiger mosquito in this area of the province of Huesca.

Local councils ask that the traps not be tampered with.

The town councils of Torrente de Cinca and Velilla de Cinca have asked residents that, if they find any of these devices, they should not handle, remove or damage them.

Their preservation is necessary so that the traps can properly fulfill their function and to guarantee the reliability of the data collected during the study.

The collaboration of the residents is therefore important for the development of the project and to improve the monitoring of the evolution of the tiger mosquito in Torrente de Cinca, Velilla de Cinca and the entire Bajo Cinca region.
