The incident occurred on Friday morning, when they had to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers on a 54-year-old man.
The mayor of Fraga, Ignacio Gramún, presented an award on Monday to local police officers Pedro Chiné and Sergio Gavín for saving the life of a 54-year-old Fraga resident who suffered cardiac arrest last Friday. The incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. while the officers were directing school traffic in front of the Santa Ana school. A municipal bus driver alerted the officers that a passenger was unwell and semi-conscious.
One of the officers manually pulled the man from the bus and, after confirming he had no vital signs, immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) . Another officer, who was performing the same duties near the San José de Calasanz Primary School, quickly rushed to the scene to assist.
Both officers, coordinated with a nurse who witnessed the incident, performed CPR, administered a rescue bag, and activated the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) installed in local police vehicles. This procedure successfully restored the patient's heart rhythm , and he was subsequently rushed to Arnau de Vilanova Hospital.
Ignacio Gramún stated that “it is our duty to publicly acknowledge the vital intervention of our officers , which meant the difference between life and death for a resident of our city.” “This incident highlights the importance of equipping public spaces and local police vehicles with defibrillators, as well as investing in this type of equipment and training , because it has been proven that they save lives,” said the mayor, who expressed his “pride in the officers who make up the Local Police.”
