Product of the week in Aragon Noble Foods: Calanda Peach PDO

Calanda

Each week Aragón Alimentos Nobles highlights a product from our autonomous community.

Yellow is the color of nobility, hope, dreams and, above all, of an emblematic, well-known and recognized fruit: the " Calanda Peach ", the only one with Protected Designation of Origin in Spain, since 1999, so this year it celebrates its 25th anniversary.

This seal exclusively protects peaches of the "Late Yellow" variety and its clones Jesca, Evaisa, and Calante, produced in 44 municipalities of the Lower Aragon region. After years of research, CITA will release four new peach varieties for commercialization in the coming days.

They are easy to recognize thanks to their large size and color, as each one has a numbered black tag identifying them as authentic Calanda peaches. They are available from the end of August until the end of October.

To ensure their quality, the peaches are meticulously treated in the field using a thinning technique , which involves removing a significant portion of the fruit from each tree. This process continues until July and ensures uniformity in the larger sizes. Afterward, each peach, still on the tree, is protected with a bag until harvest.

It is rich in minerals and vitamins, and also has a high fiber content. The Calanda peach is very versatile in the kitchen, used in recipes such as peaches with wine, borage fritters with peach ice cream, and many more.
