Students from the María Quintana School in Mequinenza receive a “masterclass” on making “coques” for San Blas and Santa Águeda

This is one of the activities of the festive program that aims to promote the transmission, dissemination and preservation of the traditions that are part of the intangible heritage of a festival with more than three centuries of history.

Fifth and sixth grade students from the María Quintana School in Mequinenza participated in a workshop on making the traditional "coques" (flatbreads) for the feast days of Saint Blaise and Saint Agatha, a local specialty. The initiative, launched last year by the town's festival committee, aims to promote the transmission, dissemination, and preservation of the traditions associated with this festival, which boasts over three centuries of history.

The San Blas and Santa Águeda committees offered a detailed masterclass to children, who learned to make their own "coques" (flatbreads) using water, flour, salt, and oil. The process began with preparing the dough in the specified proportions, then cutting it into equal portions, shaping them into balls, and allowing them to rest for a period of fermentation. Afterward, the balls were pressed with the fingers to achieve their final shape, and finally, the dough was pierced with a fork to break it open.

This is one of the activities prior to the celebration of the San Blas and Santa Águeda Festivals of Mequinenza, declared a Festival of Tourist Interest of Aragon, which are celebrated between February 2 and 4 and whose distinguishing feature is the costume contests, in children's and adults' categories, each with nearly 4.000 euros in cash prizes.
