Since 2019, this event has had a charitable character and allocates the entire amount of registrations to the entity for research and support programs.
The Mequinenza Town Council has presented the local branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) with a check for 4.000 euros. This amount, rounded up, represents the total amount collected from the 322 registrations for the 16th Annual Solidarity Hiking March held at the end of March. This non-competitive sporting event promotes healthy habits and, since 2019, has had a strong charitable focus, with all proceeds going to the AECC.
The ceremony, held in the City Hall's Plenary Hall, was attended by the president of the Local Board, Ana Mari Oliver, who was accompanied by Pilar González and María Teresa González, as well as Juana Carrillo and Mari Carmen Aldabó representing the organization. Representing the City Council were Montse Gimeno, councilor for citizens and social services, who presented the check, and Miguel Llop, councilor for sports.
Oliver highlighted "the importance of these initiatives to continue fighting cancer" and explained some of the projects the organization has underway, focusing not only on research, but also on support and accompaniment for patients and their families, and specifically in cases of travel far from home to receive cancer treatments.
For her part, Montse Gimeno reiterated the City Council's commitment to continue collaborating with the Spanish Association Against Cancer through the Local Board and highlighted the work of the entity, especially in "making the most of the resources made available to them," with everyone's collaboration, through initiatives such as, for example, the celebration of the Mequinenza Solidarity Hiking March.
