Fraga highlights the value of the municipal archive through the 'Document of the Month' initiative

The town council of the capital of Bajo/Baix Cinca has reported on this initiative through a Press Release

The first of the documents will be published this Tuesday (January 16) and will highlight the title of City that King Philip V granted to the town as a reward for its loyalty during the War of Succession.

The Fraga City Council is promoting its municipal archive through the 'Document of the Month' initiative, which begins this Tuesday with the main aim of raising awareness of this service and the heritage significance of the documents it holds. Through this initiative, which will be carried out via the City Council's communication channels, a document will be selected each month based on criteria such as historical significance, age, general interest, accessibility, unique characteristics, curiosities, or its connection to anniversaries, holidays, or other important dates.

This first publication will highlight the title of City that King Philip V granted to Fraga as a reward for the loyalty that the municipality maintained towards the monarch during the War of Succession.

“The Document of the Month is an initiative that, in addition to highlighting the value of our city's municipal archive, will also serve as an educational tool so that the residents of Fraga become more aware of their roots and the history of the municipality,” said Mayor Ignacio Gramún.

The Fraga municipal archive houses approximately 1.000 linear meters of paper documents and over 200 medieval and modern parchments. The oldest parchments date from the 14th century, and most of them are census deeds, notarial documents acknowledging debt. Those needing money could sell the deed for a set price. In return, the seller was obligated to pay the buyer a fixed annual payment.

The most important documentary series in any municipal archive is the Book of Minutes of the Plenary Session or Council, which records the deliberations and agreements of the municipal government on a wide variety of topics throughout history. The Fraga archive preserves this collection almost in its entirety from 1461 to the present day.

In addition, it is worth highlighting the Lucero Book, an inventory of documents that was written in the mid-18th century and that testifies to the existence of numerous royal privileges, mostly lost, and other documents such as sentences, current censuses or wills, among others.
