This iconic space in the city will be transformed from a cinema into a multipurpose auditorium with capacity for theatrical performances and music.
Fraga launched work this Monday on one of the city's most significant projects in recent years: the complete renovation of the Sala Florida as a multi-purpose auditorium. The removal of furniture and the clearing of debris are the first tasks underway for this project, which was awarded last April to the company Uxcar 97 SL for €2.762.653 (VAT included) and has a ten-month completion timeframe.
The mayor of Fraga, Ignacio Gramún, visited the first day of construction and remarked that “this is a crucial day for Fraga.” “Today marks the beginning of a project essential to our cultural life, as until now we haven't had a suitable venue to host events of the scale that our residents deserve,” he said, adding that, “just this past weekend, we had a very interesting and enriching lecture by the fashion designer Lorenzo Caprile, but unfortunately, the Castle has a limited capacity, and only about 200 people were able to attend.”
“Currently, Fraga has no space, large or small, suitable for hosting performing arts, film screenings, conferences, and other cultural activities,” Gramún stated, adding that this project will also “restore a venue that has been closed for two decades and is part of our city’s history.”
The renovation of the Sala Florida has a grant of 724.000 euros from the European Next Generation funds, which is subject to the condition that the project be completed before September 30, 2024. Currently, given the difficulty of completing the project before that date, the City Council is working to request an extension to extend the deadline for the grant and thus finance the works with these funds.
