The Hell Gravel Race, which expects 300 participants, will take place in the Bajo/Baix Cinca region on May 17, 18 and 19, featuring a 14-kilometer time trial and two races of 100 and 127 kilometers.
Fraga will host the Hell Gravel Race on May 17, 18, and 19. This is the first multi-stage gravel cycling race of its kind to be held in Spain, which aims to "set a national precedent," as stated this Friday by the race promoter, Toni Segura, during his presentation at a press conference also attended by Fraga's Councilor for Sports, David Casanova, and the regional Councilor for Sports, Adolfo Sasot.
The gravel and mountain bike competition, expected to draw around 300 participants, will take place over three days. The first day will be held in Zaidín, featuring a 14-kilometer individual time trial; the second and third days will start and finish in Fraga, with routes of 100 and 127 kilometers and 1.100 and 1.150 meters of elevation gain, respectively.
The Councilor for Sports, David Casanova, explained that this is “a new event for our city and region.” “It’s a bike race that will take place in the Monegros desert, reviving some of the traditions of the Trotamons, which hasn’t been held for several years for various reasons,” commented the councilor, who added that “this type of event is proving very successful wherever it goes.”
“We continue to promote sport once again, trying to bring events to our town, national events that can attract visitors to our city,” said the councilor, who valued that “we also see every sporting event as a tourist opportunity to showcase our city and our surroundings.”
For his part, Sasot stated that “when the Fraga City Council contacted the Comarca, we were immediately willing to collaborate.” “This is a significant challenge for the Comarca; it’s a new, multi-stage race, something that has never been done before, and it passes through six of our eleven towns,” he said.
“The impact is significant for the region, not only as a novelty, but also economically, because it involves three days with nearly 300 athletes who will generate economic impact,” the councilor noted.
Finally, Segura expressed his deep gratitude to the Fraga City Council and the Bajo Cinca region. “I’ve been cycling here for many years, even though I’m from Girona, and I’ve been wanting to organize a race in this area for a long time,” he said, indicating that it will be a “tough” event. “We need to organize a race that isn’t as extreme as the Titan Desert, but still challenging, because if you do a normal race, there are 40.000 people and they don’t really participate. But if it’s truly appealing because of its difficulty, the scenery, or a combination of both, people will be eager to come,” he explained.
