Is opening the windows enough to ventilate a room?

Opening windows is the classic way to ventilate homes or buildings, but it is not always enough.

Forced ventilation became especially important during the Covid-19 pandemic to prevent potential indoor infections . Often, simply opening windows is enough to ventilate rooms, but sometimes, if the orientation is unsuitable or if the premises do not allow for natural ventilation, forced ventilation is necessary.

Espacio Diseño recently coordinated the renovation of the changing rooms at the Zaidín swimming pools . Among other improvements, a mechanical ventilation system was installed , which helps improve the hygiene of the facility and reduce humidity in the building. They have also been working on the automation of the climate control system at the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús residence in Fraga, as well as on other projects and renovations that required the installation of various types of climate control and ventilation systems .

We have taken advantage of their experience to ask them what the differences are between natural and forced ventilation and to learn about the advantages of each.

Natural Ventilation vs. Forced Ventilation:

Natural Ventilation:

    • It's as simple as opening windows and doors to allow fresh air from outside to replace the air inside.
    • It works well in many homes, as long as it is possible to open the windows regularly and there is an airflow that allows for natural ventilation.

    Forced (Mechanical) Ventilation:

      • It uses mechanical systems to extract stale air from the interior and replace it with filtered air from the outside.
      • It is essential in situations where natural ventilation is not possible or is insufficient.

      When is it enough to open the windows:

      • Good air circulation: If you live in a place with well-placed windows and can open them without problems.
      • Low pollution: In areas with clean outdoor air, without much dust, pollen or pollutants.
      • Suitable climate: In regions where the climate allows windows to be open without problems of extreme temperature, either throughout the year or in specific periods such as extreme heat in summer or low temperatures in winter.

      When you need forced ventilation:

      • Closed spaces: In bathrooms, basements, or other rooms without windows.
      • High outdoor pollution: If you live in a highly polluted area, opening the windows can introduce more pollutants.
      • Humidity control: In places where humidity is high and can cause mold and bad smells.
      • Improved air quality: To reduce CO2 levels, eliminate harmful particles and maintain a comfortable temperature without losing energy.

      Importance of Forced Ventilation:

      Forced ventilation is crucial for maintaining air quality in enclosed spaces or in buildings where natural ventilation is insufficient, as well as in homes where opening windows is not a viable or recommended option. In addition to removing CO2 and regulating humidity, these systems filter pollutants and help conserve energy , significantly improving health and comfort at home.

      It is also a highly recommended system in public buildings or places with high foot traffic such as gyms, changing rooms, swimming pools, shops, hospitality and catering establishments, etc…

      On the other hand, the energy savings that this system allows can also translate into economic savings and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

      In summary, although opening windows may be sufficient in some cases, forced ventilation is essential in situations where more rigorous control of air quality is needed.
