The deadline for submitting short films to the competition is next Tuesday, July 30th.
The 2024 edition will retain the "Rio Bravo" section dedicated to Westerns, which premiered last year, and, as a new feature, the closing ceremony and awards presentation will be held on Saturday. The deadline for submitting short films to the 9th Mequinenza International Film Festival (MIFF), organized by the local production company Film Factory and the Mequinenza City Council, is next Tuesday, July 30th. The festival will take place from August 29th to September 1st. To date, over 3.000 submissions have been received through the Filmfreeway platform, and organizers expect to surpass the 3.166 short films from 121 countries that competed in the eighth edition.
In 2024, MIFF's main innovation is the reduction of screening days for the finalist short films from four to three, and the advancement of the closing ceremony and awards presentation to the afternoon of Saturday, August 31. Furthermore, it consolidates the "Río Bravo" section dedicated to Westerns, which was added to the awards last year, complementing the existing categories of Best Fiction, Best Documentary, Best Animation, Best Aragonese Short Film, and the "Antonio Blas" Audience Award. Each of the six categories includes a €200 cash prize and the "Silucam," the Festival's renowned statuette, a hybrid of a catfish and a film projector.
The competition's theme focuses on productions related to water, given its close connection to the municipality, the confluence of the Cinca, Segre, and Ebro rivers, the Aiguabarreig stream, and the two large bodies of water that border the municipality: the Mequinenza and Riba-roja reservoirs, where sports such as fishing, rowing, canoeing, and triathlon are practiced. All of these elements reinforce the town's great potential as a river tourism destination.
