Last Sunday, June 16th , the traditional chess tournament held during the third week of June took place at Bar Silver . Eight players competed in a round-robin format, with games played at 5 minutes plus a 2-second increment per move.
Fans of this sport consider this venue in the capital of the Bajo/Baix Cinca region to be the " Wimbledon of Fraga chess ".
The tournament was very exciting , and the winner wasn't decided until the final round. From the beginning, it seemed the victory would be decided between Oscar Vallverdú, the clear favorite, and Alex López, an experienced rapid chess player. But Oscar's surprising defeat to Esteban Cabós in round 6 allowed Germán Casas to take the lead and unexpectedly claim the title .
With 6 points, veteran chess player Germán Casas from Fraga took the title. Second place went to Óscar Vallverdú with 5.5 points, and third place, with a score of 4.5, was Alex López.
The next event for chess lovers will be next Saturday, June 22nd, with the XII Fraga City Open , which will be held in 'Lo Castell' starting at 10 a.m.
