The long-awaited project to build a footbridge linking Velilla and Zaidín, separated by two kilometers, has been suspended by the current government of the Bajo Cinca region due to a lack of funding. The initiative, proposed by the previous administration (PSOE), aimed to facilitate pedestrian and emergency vehicle access, with an estimated cost of between 2,5 and 3 million euros.
The footbridge had been conceived as part of the 'Entre Ríos' Tourism Sustainability Plan, with a budget of €2,3 million, of which only €900,000 had been secured. At the recent regional council meeting, the Tourism Councilor, Javier Carrasquer (PP), announced its suspension, describing the project as "unfeasible and lacking funding."
The decision has generated disagreement among political groups. Marco Ibarz, from the PSOE, lamented the measure, suggesting that funding could have been sought from other administrations and criticizing the loss of opportunities for tourism development and infrastructure improvement in the Bajo Cinca area. Alejandro Poy of Tú Aragón expressed his disagreement, emphasizing that the footbridge was the "backbone" of the plan and that its rejection lacked practical sense.
In the same session, the regional council approved an addendum to the agreement to extend the Tourism Sustainability Plan for two years, generating divided opinions among the parties. With the abstention of the PSOE, Tú Aragón, and Vox, the majority held by the PP and Entre Todos ensured the extension's approval.
