Between September 15 and October 15, driving motor vehicles off marked roads will be prohibited.
Once again, the mayor of Fraga, Ignacio Gramún, has issued a decree to protect the deer population during the rutting season. Through this document, the Fraga City Council stipulates that, between September 15th and October 15th, driving motor vehicles off designated roads is prohibited.
On the other hand, the statement also establishes that only authorized lighting elements may be used in vehicles, and that flashlights, spotlights and/or elements that dazzle animals are prohibited.
This measure complies with Law 42/2007, of December 13, on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, which in its article 54 section 5 provides for the prohibition of "intentionally killing, damaging, disturbing or harassing wild animals, whatever the method used or the phase of their biological cycle."
Furthermore, Law 1/2015 on Hunting in Aragon, in its article 41, states that "the use of mirrors, headlights, lanterns and other artificial light sources is prohibited, and is considered a serious offense as provided in article 82, section 18 of said Law."
Gramun explained that “this is a common occurrence at this time of year, as the rutting season attracts the interest of many people who travel to the mountains to witness this spectacle, so the City Council must set limits to ensure that this activity is respectful of the animals and their environment.”
