Every year, on September 21st, World Alzheimer's Day is celebrated, an event established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and sponsored by Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI) in 1994.
Alzheimer's disease is the leading cause of dementia, accounting for up to 70% of cases according to CEAFA . In Spain, 1.200.000 people are affected by the disease, and more than 5.000.000 citizens are affected by it, including both those who suffer from it and their family caregivers.
To prevent the onset of Alzheimer's, health professionals recommend adopting healthy lifestyle habits, such as a good diet, physical exercise, and controlling cholesterol and blood pressure.
Some symptoms that may lead us to suspect the onset of this disease include disorientation, minor lapses in memory, or memory loss, but we must not forget that a medical professional should always make the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment.
Once Alzheimer's disease is diagnosed, treatments typically combine cognitive stimulation and medication. Day centers or social care facilities with specialized professionals are excellent resources for improving the quality of life for patients and their families.
Lina Mur, a psychologist at the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Residence , spoke to Diario del Bajo Cinca and explained some tips and recommendations for patients and their families.
On the other hand, AFEDAF Fraga has carried out several activities this week, and as part of the events scheduled to commemorate World Alzheimer's Day, they presented the Mayor of Fraga, Ignacio Gramún, with the certificate recognizing the City of Fraga as a " Municipality in Solidarity with Alzheimer's ." The organization expressed its gratitude for his solidarity and sensitivity towards people with dementia.
